SALT LAKE THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY WILL HOLD
CONVOCATION ON SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 9, 2007
Dr. Jeffrey Silliman to be
installed as the seminary’s third president
Salt Lake City, August 23, 2007 -
– On Sunday September 9 at 4:00 PM, Salt Lake
Theological Seminary will celebrate Convocation and the installation of
its new president at First United Methodist Church, located at 200 South
203 East in Salt Lake City. All members of the public are invited to
attend the ceremony and the reception that follows.
“Convocation is the calling together of the members of the academic
community and is a common event for an institution to hold at the
beginning of each school year,” explains Academic Dean Tom McClenahan.
“This year, as we begin Fall Semester we have a special event to
celebrate at Convocation: the installation of Dr. Jeffrey Silliman as
the seminary’s third president.”
Dr.
Silliman was appointed by the seminary’s Board of Trustees on August 1.
A graduate of the University of Utah and Fuller Theological Seminary
with a Doctor of Ministry from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary,
Dr. Silliman is an ordained Minister of Word and Sacrament in the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Dr. Silliman was pastor of Mount Olympus
Presbyterian Church in Salt Lake City for 26 years before taking the
position of Executive Presbyter of the Presbytery of Riverside in
southern California in 2002. For the past six years, Dr. Silliman has
served the seminary in the voluntary position of Chair of the Board.
The
preacher at Convocation will be the Reverend France Davis, pastor of
Calvary Baptist Church and a well-known civic leader and community
advocate. Special music will be provided by the Calvary Baptist men’s
chorus.
