Dr. Donald McCullough Appointed as President of Salt Lake Theological Seminary

Interim President Dr. James Munter to Assist with Fundraising and Development

SALT LAKE CITY, November 1, 2004 – The Board of Directors of Salt Lake Theological Seminary today announced that Dr. Donald McCullough has accepted the position of President of the seminary.

Dr. McCullough is former President and Professor of Theology and Preaching at San Francisco Theological Seminary, and an ordained minister within the Presbyterian Church USA. He holds a Ph.D. in Systematic Theology from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary. An accomplished author, Dr. McCullough has written eight books as well as numerous journal and magazine articles. He is a former Senior Editor of Christianity Today.

“I am truly excited about the opportunities a person of Don McCullough’s caliber brings to Salt Lake Theological Seminary,” said board chairman Dr. Jeffrey Silliman. “As stewards responsible for the seminary, the board’s task is to discover and deploy the best persons available to be of service to God. I believe that calling Don McCullough to the position of President is God’s will for the school and for Don at this time in his life. The board knows Don to be a person who has soared on the heights of success and struggled through the depths of failure, and we are confident that God’s grace, mercy and power will sustain the seminary and Don as our President.”

As President of San Francisco Theological Seminary from 1994 to 2000, McCullough quickly earned praise as a passionate, articulate advocate for that seminary. He presided over a period of growth and development that included the first successful capital campaign in the seminary’s history, a $12 million campaign to repair the school’s earthquake-damaged historic buildings. Since leaving his position with San Francisco Theological Seminary, he has been in an active ministry of writing.

“Don McCullough is a seasoned seminary leader concerned for the faithful and effective nurturing and preparation of students for ministry,” said Academic Dean Tom McClenahan. “We welcome him as a brother in Christ and praise God for the new chapter He is now opening up for both the seminary and Don.”

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be part of the educational ministry of Salt Lake Theological Seminary,” said Dr. McCullough. “I have been attracted to its academic excellence, spiritual vitality, and community warmth. I look forward to serving with great expectancy, confident of the faithfulness of God.”

Dr. McCullough’s appointment as President is effective immediately. Dr. James Munter, who has been serving as interim President for the past several weeks, has agreed to assist with fundraising and development on a voluntary basis as a member of the Board of Directors.
