UTAH DIVISION OF CONSUMER PROTECTION AGREES THAT SALT LAKE THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY IS A ‘BONA FIDE’ RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION

Seminary’s recent fund raising campaign was conducted in full compliance with state laws governing charitable solicitations

Salt Lake City, June 7, 2005 – The Utah Division of Consumer Protection has concluded that Salt Lake Theological Seminary is correctly classified as a religious charitable organization. Questions about the school’s status came up when the seminary raised over $528,000 in less than 50 days. After a routine but thorough review, the agency concluded that the seminary is a bona fide religious organization and exempt under the Charitable Solicitations Act

“We are naturally pleased the Division of Consumer Protection has recognized our status as a religious charitable organization,” says seminary President Don McCullough. “Since we are the only graduate school of theology in the state, I can understand the difficulty in classifying us correctly.”

The decision by the Division of Consumer Protection also means the seminary will not have to file an application before engaging in charitable solicitations. State officials also reviewed the seminary's status as a postsecondary proprietary school and renewed its permit for another two years.

“We complied with their request to furnish information, confident that we are following the law,” McCullough added. “We applaud the efforts of this watchdog agency to protect all of us from unscrupulous businesses in the state of Utah.”
