SALT LAKE THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY RECEIVES ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP IN THE ASSOCIATION OF THEOLOGICAL SCHOOLS

Acceptance as an associate member begins the process of accreditation.

SALT LAKE CITY, JULY 10, 2006 – At last month’s biennial meeting of the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) in Chicago, Salt Lake Theological Seminary was received as an associate member by unanimous vote. This is a necessary and highly significant step toward achieving full accreditation as a theological school.

The ATS, composed of approximately 250 Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish institutions, is the chief accrediting agency of graduate theological schools in North America. Its stamp of approval is important for prospective students, charitable foundations, and denominations seeking approved seminaries for the training of their candidates for ordained ministry.

Prior to the seminary’s nomination, a representative of the ATS paid a site visit to the school to evaluate programs and assess strengths and readiness for nomination. In addition, four member schools – Fuller Theological Seminary, Regent College, Denver Seminary, and Trinity Evangelical Divinity School – wrote recommendations on the school’s behalf.

“The affirmation we received from those seminaries and from our site visit was a great encouragement,” said seminary president Dr. Donald McCullough. “It was a joy for me to be present for the ATS vote and to receive warm words of welcome from our colleagues in theological education. The board, faculty, and staff at Salt Lake Theological Seminary have been working toward this day for many years. Now begins the task of undertaking an extensive self-study, which should prepare us for full accreditation in the next two to four years.”
